Back to the modern landscape before we take a hiatus on episode 010 of The Techno Files.
That’s right, The Techno Files will be on hiatus until 2025. Some exciting changes are afoot personally and professionally. For more on that tune to the end of the episode.

But for this mix, I’m raw dogging it once again with some deep, driving & atmospheric techno, which is where this old schooler’s modern tastes have been gravitating. It’s been a pleasure getting to know all these new artists & labels and many have reached out to me after being featured. This project has been highly rewarding and I don’t plan on stopping.

It’s that time of night when you realize you should probably be headed home but the beats are starting to get a little mental, screwing with your head and you need to hear just one more to see where this is going. Then another. And another. Suddenly noon approaches and you don’t understand what just happened! It’s ok, we’ve all been there.
Dedicated to one of the greats of the golden era and gone too soon, Rino Cerrone.

If you were to ask me to close my eyes and imagine a pile of my strongest peak hour records from the golden era, most of these would make the cut. I should be spreading them across multiple episodes, but I just couldn’t help myself. I toured and played with these bad boys so many times. Very proud of this group of effective bangers! They belong together forever.

I’m especially fond of the first track on this one. Infectious locked grooves like these would spawn spontaneous breakdance circles, fueling my mixing to get more and more manic on three decks, leaving us all feeling kinda twisted by the end. Nearly half of these tracks are Scandinavian, but I can personally attest this was that midwestern jackin’ rave sound!

I wanted to do an episode of some earlier “pre golden era” techno, to give a sense of the experimentation that went on before the scene exploded, sampling sounds that survived the test of time. It’s easy to forget where we came from, but these formative beats were the underpinnings of what would become.

Now we’re getting into the meat of my collection, and some manic tracks that really defined the sound I was touring with between 2000 and 2004. A few of these also appeared on my 2001 mix High Heel Techno. Some pretty beat up vinyl required lots of TLC but they come through sounding as clean as ever. I close it out focusing on the mad genius called Invexis from Germany.

On this one we go a little deeper and darker to ramp things up because episode three is going to get a little nuts. But these more minimal tracks come through so warm and punchy. I’m very happy with the overall sound of these digital transfers.

I’m pleased to present the inaugural episode of The Techno Files, my new podcast with a heavy early focus showcasing the golden era of techno that drove me hard from the late 90s through the mid-2000s. All tracks are remastered hifi encodings from my personal vinyl library.

This is years in the making; you might remember some posts I made about transcribing my classic techno vinyl library. The tracks featured in the coming episodes are cleaned up encodings of that history, but treated with a modern touch. It’s incredible how well they hold up.
I’ve been wanting these tracks for my permanent digital DJ library and realized that sharing them in podcast form made the most sense so that I could include you in on this special journey. Most of these gems cannot be found online so the vinyl to digital process I undertook was critical. The process has been intense but I’m finally ready.
After months of research, years of hard work, and over a decade of wanting a platform to host my own podcast, we’re finally here. I know a lot of you have been asking for techno music since I came back and I thank you for your patience. I think you’ll find it was worth the wait. The encodings sound pristine and I can’t wait to play them out, alongside more modern music, for years to come.

In 1995 I was quite taken with trance. This is one of my very first attempts at making a mixtape. I believe it was recorded before dd01, just as trance was fully taking hold of our scene in the US. The audio is encoded off a cassette, but I did my best to remaster it back to life. I gave this mix to very few people. There is no track listing.
