Pig Dance (Feb, 2023)

Pig Dance at Ramrod Fort Lauderdale was the most important gig I had since deciding to come out of DJ retirement 18 months ago, never preparing so hard for an all night set. It’s the culmination of 18 months of learning, by trial and error, curating the best of what has worked, knowing I didn’t have to hold back—and I didn’t.

While I’m fairly new to playing for gay crowds, I have the benefit of literally decades of experiencing the gay nightlife in multiple cities around the world, but mainly all those New York experiences that have left their indelible mark. This set brings all those experiences together, culminating with these recent months of living life as a local DJ, something I’ve always wanted to experience.

Hopefully those who have stuck by me have benefitted in some way. I did not come up in the DJ world playing gigs like this. It’s definitely been a learning experience but it has made me stronger. The narrative in this set is the vision I’ve had for many many years of what I’d personally want to experience at a major gay party. Some of the tracks in this set you might not expect from me, but I’ve been holding onto them in my back pocket with this vision in mind.

I know it’s long, but there isn’t some peak 1-2 hour stretch I could edit out for your convenience. It stands alone as a single statement.

Foundation (2008)

This mix belongs with Over & Out as an interesting turning point in my taste as a DJ. I wasn’t only interested in super hard techno or soulful deep house. I was finally starting to cross over into more accessible styles. But the two mixes hold personal meaning too, as they helped one of my best friends through a difficult period in his life.

In 2008, I wrote:

“originally recorded for the funk-u show on livesets.com broadcast on august 28, 2008. this is an extention of over & out, but heads into more serious territory later on. you could say this is my take on this whole minimal craze. while i don’t see myself playing entire minimal sets, i do see myself working its sound into a broader set. foundation finishes up with a minimix of the best work from mike dehnert, probably the most important new techno artist of the year.”

Equator 2 (2003)

It’s strange that I never made a third Equator mix, since the two of these were pretty popular. I was just coming down from the tribal bug that bit me pretty hard in 2001, and these mixes were basically my personal answer to where I thought it should go.

In 2003, I wrote:

“equator 2 was recorded on a friday night after eating some bad food. my stomach in knots, i made it a mission to do something constructive with the evening as it was cut short by a rare burger in 90 degree weather. it’s best to mix when i don’t know where my head is at, and here you have it. one part cunty beats, one part trippy minimal strangeness.”

I truly felt bit by the tribal bug in 2003, and had to give a little bit of that here. I tried to include all the genres I like to play in one mix and found it so complete, I decided to stop the “dd” numbering system, since I wasn’t making actual mixtapes anymore either. This was also the final CD I mass produced, as the Internet started to become the main way everyone shared mixes.
